Weekend getaway in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. We will visit the protected Biotope of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the Santimamiñe Caves, the fishing villages of Elantxobe and Bermeo, as well as the Museum of Peace, which will allow us to better understand our environment and its nature.
We will start the weekend knowing the history of Bizkaia at the Gernika Board House, a meeting place for the towns of Bizkaia, where assemblies were held next to the Tree of Gernika. On April 26, 1937 the bombs reduced Gernika to rubble. The Museum of Peace invites us to reflect on Peace and Human Rights.
The Santimamiñe Cave is the most important archaeological site in Bizkaia and a World Heritage Site. A cave that preserves remains of human settlements from more than 14,000 years ago. To end Saturday what better than to visit Elantxobe, a genuine fishing town and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, located on the Basque coast, was chosen to be Dragonstone in Game of Thrones. The privileged location of the century-old hermitage, challenging the Cantabrian Sea, creates a fantasy setting.
Before starting our way back, we will make a stop in Bermeo. Its old town represents exactly what a medieval town was like. The poorer fishermen's houses contrasted with the tower houses that welcomed the nobility.
