In Zumaia, most of the first inhabitants of the town were dedicated to the cultivation of the field. The history of Getaria starts from an undetermined date. Its creator was King Sancho VI of Navarra, who towards the end of the 12th century distinguished the inhabitants of the coastal enclave with his concession. Zarautz is located in an extensive plain in the province of Gipuzkoa, open to the sea. Its main attraction is its beautiful two-kilometer-long beach, with very fine sand that is flanked by the cliffs of Santa Bárbara and Mollarri.

Getaria has traditionally been a town of fishermen and great sailors like Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to go around the world. For hundreds of years whaling had a great importance in the economy of the town. In fact, the whale has historically been the main motif for their shields.
