The entrance of the Camino de Santiago Frances to Navarra is through Sant Jean de Pied de Port. It is located in the Roncesvalles pass at the base of the Pyrenees and that is precisely indicated in its name: “foot of the port”. It is a walled town with multiple entrance gates. The most famous is the Saint Jacques gate which was declared, together with the routes of the Camino de Santiago in France, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. Inside the wall, the town is quite small, but no less charming. The Eyheraberry Bridge over the River Nive is a romantic Roman bridge and one of the highlights of San Juan Pie de Puerto.
Continuation to Roncesvalles, where the historic defeat of Charlemagne and the Camino de Santiago made it memorable as a shelter for walkers and pilgrims, a focus of legends and a meeting of cultures. The solid walls of the collegiate church, built in the shelter of the port of Ibañeta, will protect you from the hostile winter and will transport you to a world of battles and myths. A place of passage where history and legend are concentrated, Orreaga / Roncesvalles is a beautiful forest area located in the Navarrese Pyrenees and which is the point mostly chosen by pilgrims to start the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
